Clipboard History

Copied items, kept privately on your Mac. Search them, preview them and paste them back with ⇧⌘V.

Clipboard History keeps what you copy — text, links, images, files, colors, email
addresses and code — in an encrypted history that never leaves your Mac. Press
Shift-Command-V anywhere to open it, find what you need, and paste it into the app you
are in.

The panel

Shift-Command-V opens a floating panel over whatever app you are using. You can change
the shortcut in Settings → Clipboard History, and Open Clipboard History is also in
the menu bar.

  • The sidebar filters the list: All, Favorites, a kind (Text, Images, Links,
    Files, Colors, Emails, Code), or one of the apps you copied from.
  • The list shows each item with the app it came from and when you copied it. New copies
    appear while the panel is open.
  • A click selects an item for preview. Double-click or press Return to paste. You can enable
    single-click pasting in Settings → Clipboard History.
  • The preview shows the selected item in full: links with their title and image;
    Spotify, YouTube, Apple Music and SoundCloud links as media cards; files with thumbnails;
    colors with their values; and code with syntax highlighting.
  • Details show the app, the type, and the exact time you copied it.

Search matches the text of your items, the apps they came from, and the text inside copied
images and QR codes.

Pasting

  • Return pastes the selected item into the app you came from.
  • Option-Return pastes it as plain text.
  • Command-1 to Command-9 paste one of the first nine items.
  • Command-K opens the command list: pin, favorite, edit, text transforms (change case,
    tidy whitespace and lines, URL and Base64 encoding, format JSON and more), merge several items into one, split
    an item into lines, and clear history.

Paste Next pastes your recent items one after another, oldest first, each time you
press its shortcut. Copy & Merge (off by default) appends to the last item when you
press Command-C twice. Both are set up in Settings.

In the main window

Clipboard → History in the sidebar is a full library of your history: search and filter
by kind, app and date, sort, and select several items to copy, pin, favorite, delete or
export them. Pasting into other apps is done from the panel.

Privacy and storage

Your history is encrypted and stored only on this Mac. Items that apps mark as confidential
are ignored by default. Ordinary copied text is not automatically identified as a password;
exclude password managers and other sensitive apps in Settings.

In Settings → Clipboard History you choose:

  • How long each kind of item is kept, and how much storage the history may use.
  • Whether history is cleared when you quit, restart, lock the screen, put the Mac to sleep,
    or at a set time each day. Favorites can be kept when clearing.
  • Whether link previews are fetched. When they are on, a link's title and image are
    downloaded from that site.
  • Whether your dictations are saved to the history too.

Pause Clipboard History from Settings or the menu bar at any time. You can export your
history to a file, optionally protected with a password, and import it again.

Sounds

Copy, paste, delete and selection can each play a sound: none, any macOS system sound, or
an audio file you choose, each with its own volume.
